The Bump
Sonja Czarnecki

is really one of many hills
my body shows today.
Some days it hides, seems almost taut
a frost-heave underway.

Then one day I oomph to rise.
Its apple-top and eye
can see me now—the sandbags shift—
it’s straining toward the sky.

Where you’ll take me no one knows.
You get there first already—
a tiny submarine commander
climbing fast and steady.
