Holly Day

my mother used to tell me how
we had had ancestors
accused of witchcraft
burned at the stake
talk about the importance of standing up
how “if the woman had been united
those girls in Salem might not have died”
standing here, surrounded by the graves
of strangers, one of whom
is supposed to belong to me
I already know
I wouldn’t have said anything, that
I would have closed my eyes and ears
to their cries for help
busied myself with laundry and children
instead of action: too small, too frightened,
too weak.
