Tread Water
Joanne Faries

she joins the YMCA
because she is afraid to fly
her dreams reveal no explosion
yet the plane is dismembered

silver canister without wings
coasts into oceans, rivers,
or lakes

bobs gently, water seeps silent
everyone escapes
the demon fear gives
no explanation

she, alone,

holds the seat cushion
flotation device
and treads water

weekly lessons
sign in and out
hours in the pool

face focuses
minimal arm movement
legs churn a steady slow beat

determined
she will survive her vacation
