That which we call a rose
Sabine Boucher

Thank you for this single red rose bud.
Its just perfect that you thought of it.

But what I really wanted, you should know,
was one of those pairs of red underwear
folded around a plastic stem to look
like a rose bud wrapped in cellophane
on the convenience store counter
sometimes beside the real roses.

I wonder if you thought of that.

Something to remember me by, you might have said.
(Maybe. At least, something I could use.)

Thank you, but I can do nothing with your real rose,
that is now, (look), just gorgeous in its vase,
standing tall and alone in full blossom.
