When Divorce was Just an Annoying Speck in my Right Eye
Nonnie Augustine

Did you hear what I said?
You don't look like you heard.
Maybe I spoke too softly.
I'm sorry. I thought I was clear.
But you look unruffled, the same.
You look like you could even smile.
Try, just try. I will say it again.
Try to listen to what I say.
Try to understand.
I can't go on like this.
I want the truth from you.
I won't pretend anymore
to believe what you say
for your sake
or mine.
This is what I said to you
only a minute ago.
"Intimacy died
when we compromised.
Our careful lies
killed
candor
clarity
caring."
Well, then. I'm finished.
Did you hear what I said?
Do you understand?
Put the cat down
and listen to me.

Oh, Nonnie... been there. So sharp, so tight.

Oh, yes, indeed. You said it, my friend.

That made me remember one long ago - far away. I remember coming home the next day. She was gone. So was the cat. You always get straight at it, Nonnie, and you did it again.

I found myself holding my breath as I read this, Nonnie. You skewer the truth in such simple, eloquent language.

Incisive and unflinching. Excellent!

The cat is such a nice touch, Nonnie. The animal gets more attention. Used to hide behind.

I love, in particular, how you waste no time in getting to the meat of it. From the title to the first two lines, slam. Beautifully done.
