Why There's No Egg Salad in the House
Michelle Mandolia

Tonight I try slipping the eggs in
before the water boils.
When it is hot, I place each
egg on my spoon and lower it
into the pot.
I watch bubbles collect on the shell,
watch the eggs drift and do their slow,
gravity-less bounce.
I watch as my newest attempt fails,
as one and then two eggs
crack and ooze into the surrounding water.

I donít remember this happening to my mother
who boils eggs by the dozen.
Itís another should I play with. I should
be able to hard boil eggs without them cracking
and oozing into the pot.
I try and fail, try and fail.
If, as someone told me, the definition of insanity
is trying the same thing again and again
and expecting different results
then this is not quite insanity
but circling somewhere outside,
where human nature works its quiet magic,
propels one to try and try again,
just a bit differently, just a bit wiser,
and always hopeful
of what may come.
